In what was maybe the most ftting tribute, when the recreation department opened its new three-feld softball complex, it bestowed Huck’s name on the facility. The Walter Huckaby Softball Complex opened in the spring of 1997 – visitors, fans, and players are greeted by a bust of Huck as they enter the complex. The late David Frier, a local artist, fashioned the bust and presented it to the recreation department.
Huck retired in 1998 as the recreation department’s director; he had been promoted to director six years prior. For the last 19 years, he, along with James Dennis, has volunteered at Augusta National during Masters Week. Because he volunteers, he is granted one round per year at the course. From May to October, Augusta National is closed to golfers. This year, Huck joked that it would take that long to fx the damage he did when he played just prior to it shutting down.
Huck has been married to the former Vicky Johnson since 1980. He has four children – Gary, Victor (deceased), Donna, and Glenna. He also has a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. CCM
