He, of course, is modest in his participation. He states that as the CEO, you must leave yourself out of the equation. The big picture must be seen and you utilize the position to improve the organization. He agrees with the statement ‘It takes a village!’ He goes on to explain that he is never the ‘chair.’ “I do not have direct ownership of this hospital. I just search the market for the best opportunities for the entire community.” He stresses the importance of consistency in effective leadership.
As we stroll through the hospital, he is met with friendly greetings and waves across the room. The memory garden is found to be just that. George Heck points out the names of faithful employees who spent their lives in service to our hospital. When we are back inside, I asked him:
