for the trip to the river. Tindall was making good time to the fre, but it was raining and the roads at the time weren’t paved. The truck was bouncing on the roads and the canvas that covered the fre equipment in the back of the truck was coming untied. Tindall slowed down and told Hubert to climb into the back of the truck and lay across the canvas to keep it from blowing off and to keep the hoses from falling out of the back of the truck. Hubert did what his father said and spread out across the rear of the fre truck. Tindall wasn’t driving as fast as he had been but he was still
moving along pretty good. He tried to avoid the bumps in the road, but the tires of the truck found one particularly nasty pit in the old clay road. The truck bounced badly, and in the process, Hubert jammed the little fnger on his left hand so severely that the bone slid back into his hand. Though in tremendous pain, Hubert didn’t say anything and helped the volunteers put out the fre as best he could. When the fre was under control, he showed his hand to his father. Tindall knew his son needed medical attention, but he also knew he had to make sure the fre was extinguished.
ABOVE Hubert Littlefeld looks at a few old family photos at his dining room table. Hubert’s house is located on a piece of property that has been in his family for generations. At one time, it was located outside the city; now, the Littlefeld property is literally in the shadows of the hospital.
