he COMAquatic Center is a seriously impressive place. With multiple pools, physical therapy, retail, competitive programs and community services, the center is an oasis in Midland, Texas. Established in 1967, COM boasts a winning tradition. The Aquatic Center has produced numerous, state, national and Olympic competitors over the years. But, never before in the Center’s impressive history has a swimmer and a diver qualifed to compete at the 2012 Olympic trials. This year is a frst. Diver, Anna James and swimmer, Natalie Hinds, both earned a shot at the 2012 London Olympic Games.

Each of these two athletes is remarkable and has an individual formula for success that includes a strong mind, family support and an incredible work ethic.

Tall, with the long reach and strong shoulders of an elite swimmer, Natalie Hinds has spent the last two years propelling herself toward global competition. This year, Hinds made her third straight appearance at state and won the state championship in the 100 butterfy with a time of 52.96 seconds which barely missed the state record, 52.70 seconds, held by Olympian Dana Vollmer. Hinds also grabbed silver in the 100 backstroke. In the process, she was named Female Swimmer of the Meet for Class 5A. Plus, she was honored this past spring as the Outstanding Athlete of the Year at the Midland High School Academic Forum. The award is based on both athletic and academic performance. Just seventeen years old, Hinds will graduate early from Midland High School, December 2011. Hinds suggested this strategy to her COM coach, Andy Korda. She wanted this time to concentrate on winning a lane in the 2012 Olympics. “That shows her level of maturity. She has fnished with recruiting trips and will have this time to focus on the trials,” said Korda. A top college prospect, Hinds will choose from four of the country’s best Division 1 programs. After trips to Texas, Florida, USC and Arizona, Hinds said, “I liked every one of the recruiting trips. All were fun and each university was different. I am still in the process and will make my decision by November.”
